I remember when I went to school in Rotterdam looking at this gigentic hole in the ground while passing Blaak. This hole was surrounded by a large fence displaying pictures of the future ' markthal' to be. This immediately spoke to my imagination. I love new initiatives and when somebody asked me why I dont live in Rotterdam cause I was studying there my answer always was: I miss the karakter of buildings and some innovative projects in the surrounding. My Quality of Life would not be as high as in where I live now Breda.

When I found out the Markthal would become a 40 meters high building, housing 228 apartments, an indoor market containing 96 specialty shops devoted to eating and drinking, bars and restaurants, an underground Albert Heijn supermarket and underground parking with 1.200 parking lots, I couldnāt wait for it to be ready. I think that if I was going to study now in Rotterdam I would love to live there. It is a upcoming aera that needs this investment. It is a well known concept from back in the days when a lot of markets were offering the people of the surrounding area everything they need for living.
So last week it was this grand opening with Maxima and my thoughts were: itās time to meet my new best friend: a state-of-the-art building offering culinary delicacies and a view on the biggest art work in the world.
The shops all sell food-related produce and an underground supermarket is also included in the complex. Most of the shops are biological, fresh and self produced what is a signal we see a lot these days. People are tend to pay more for fair food since all the E-numbers are required. In the past years people tend to change their lifestyle to an more healthy, fit and responsibility way of living. They want to know where their food is coming from and who the person is behind it. This is important for the income of the farmers and a whole new market is born withit. Think about the initiatives and my dutch readers will know this: HelloFresh or Boerschappen this is a food deliver with only fresh food with cards on it where it came from. I like this movement in living because when they build or rebuild now old buildings or new buildings they have to think about : can people live here? Is everything a person needs available?
I hope that in the future we will see more of these Market Halls and the community feeling and respecting your surrounding is more comment.
